Good, good& just make sure when you start the maneuver, you are on
the balls of your feet, so you have the mobility to go left or right.
Landon sucked in a deep breath, nodding, slowly letting his aching
muscles come down from their high. He walked at Brian s side as they circled
the salle, both loosening and cooling their bodies.
Landon looked forward to this each day, to this expulsion of energy and
frustration. This, at least, he could control.
Brian pushed a hand through his short blond hair, making it stand up
wildly in its current sweat-soaked form. So how was Kirith last night?
Ah, the regular question of each day, by every occupant of the island.
Landon shrugged a little, his hair hiding the bleakness of his expression.
He is bonding well to Chase; seems to trust him enough to eat and drink in
his presence. Michael says that Kirith is gaining weight at least, and he is
giving him something to sleep, to allay the nightmares. His ribs are healing
well. Michael said the swelling of the dislocated shoulder is finally gone, and
that his infections are almost conquered. The medication is completely out of
his system, so he is more steady on his feet, more aware.
Brian gave a long sigh, his shoulders slumping a little.
Still nothing memory wise?
Nothing. Landon s tone was short with all the emotions he withheld. It
has been three weeks, Brian. Three goddamn weeks, and he remembers
nothing of us. He rubbed unconsciously at his chest, at the tightness there
that always came when he thought of Kirith now.
The mind is a strange thing, Landon. Give him time. Something or
someone will come along and shake him free, partially or maybe even
totally. Brian laid a reassuring hand on Landon s shoulder. He will
remember you, Landon. Don t ever doubt that.
Landon gave a harsh, choking laugh. Remember& and then toss me off
the island. He didn t want me before, Brian.
Enzo says otherwise, and I hardly think he would lie about it, Landon.
He hates your guts, remember? Brian gave a little grin and nudged Landon s
shoulder.
Yeah, I guess that is true. Enzo might be a bastard at the best of times,
but he is no liar. Landon found it ironic that he found comfort in thinking of
his worst detractor. He and Kirith s brother had come to a truce of sorts, and
certainly there had never been talk of Landon leaving, but&
This was all assuming that Kirith would regain his memory and actually
want Landon around, especially after what had happened. Would Kirith ever
be able to accept a lover again?
Landon felt young and helpless. He wanted to be with Kirith in whatever
manner the other would allow, but to never know a lover s touch again&
That was the harsh reality that pressed upon him. He would have to be very
sure he could endure such a thing, that he loved Kirith enough to accept
whatever could be given, no matter how little or in what form.
This was commitment indeed from so young a man as he, and he
agonized over the permanency of his feelings, unsure of himself and unwilling
to have his own inadequacies harm Kirith in any fashion whatsoever.
At dinner that night, the men sat around the great table, eating in
subdued silence. The empty space at the head of the table was a silent weight
on their minds and emotions, and most of them didn t linger once their
hunger had been appeased.
As usual, Landon and Brian were left alone, their voices echoing eerily in
the large room.
Trent is going to be arriving tomorrow. Brian s voice held anticipation.
He and Trent had always been close.
Landon looked up, a faint smile curving his lips. He had always liked
Trent, even when the Captain of Kirith s guards had been defensive of
Landon s presence on the island in the beginning.
He is done therapy, finally?
Trent had almost lost his life on that terrible night when Kirith and
Laura had been taken. Still, he was lucky. Seven of his guards had died,
caught in the betrayal perpetrated by of one of their own. Enzo had men out
looking for Jason and whoever had worked with him, and Landon could
almost pity them. They had no hope with the Martinelli on their heels.
Landon would love to be the one who finally caught up to Jason, the coward,
the traitor, who had given Kirith and Laura over to Marcello and turned on
his own brotherhood.
One bullet would not be enough.
Trent and four others had survived, barely.
Trent s leg had been shattered by multiple gunshots, and he had spent
months in the hospital and endured several operations. Now he was finally in
a state to be able to return to the island. Enzo was sending a therapist along
to ensure that Trent s recovery continued. The Martinelli was generous to
those who were loyal, and Trent had been with Kirith since the latter had
been in his teens.
It would be good to see Kirith s burly shadow again, and certainly Trent
would be relieved to be back with his charge.
At least, until he saw Kirith s current condition.
Landon s smile died.
Brian punched him lightly on the shoulder. Trent s been told. He isn t
coming into this blindly.
