moment, this life. Alexandria willed every breath of life she maintained, attempting to channel it to
Kyle.
Come on Kyle; stay with me, please, they re on the way. Please God... you ve got make it
through.

EPILOGUE
As she peeked around the corner of the hospital room door, Alex was please to see Kyle sitting
up with a healthy color returned to his face.
When the ambulance had picked him up two days ago, she d been almost certain he would not
survive the trip to the hospital. She rode with him, holding on and willing every ounce of energy she
possessed into praying for his survival. She could almost feel the ebb of life leave her to re-energize his
cells.
They wheeled him to the emergency room and she had been lost to waiting, minutes slowly
ticking by like ancient moss creeping its way over the mimosa, until the doctors came with the tentative
news of his recovery. Alex didn t think she ever experienced so much joy before, as she had when she
heard those optimistic words.
The world was a very strange place now. So much had happened that she had no explanation
for. She knew that somehow some other worldly power had entered their mortal realm of existence, but
for the life of her, she had no idea how or why. Kyle was the only thread to sanity left in her shattered
reality.
Hey, you re looking good, detective.
You re a sight for sore eyes yourself, Alex. Come on in.
She walked over and perched upon the corner of the hospital bed. A cloak of comfort folded
over them as if they were old school chums reuniting for a cup of coffee. Tragedy and chaos had a way
of cementing relationships quickly. The knowledge they shared would be forever binding. No one else
she knew could even conceive of the unspeakable transactions in the past days.
Not that anyone would believe it, either. Hell, she didn t even believe it herself. If it took her
the rest of her lifetime though, she would find out.
Somewhere in her ancestry lay the key. The spirit of the woman who called herself Elisha had
left Alex now, but she knew residual elements of the magic remained. If she had to cross the sea to
Ireland to solve the mysteries, she would.
The base knowledge infused within her cells as a result of the night s events. Somehow when
the spirit or entity that took command of her body entered, Alex absorbed the energy. Memories filtered
in like waves of a dream. Impressions really, but she was certain it was a part of her past, some family

connection she needed to seek counsel on.
They sat in silence for a while. Alex held Kyle s hand and was pleased to find so much warmth
had returned. Neither of them really knew what to say.
She finally jumped in and broke the silence. So, the doctor tells me you ll be released in a day
or two?
Yeah, so I ve been told. Believe me, doll; I m ready to go now, but you now how the
bureaucracy goes.
Will you be going back home to Minnesota then?
Yeah, and I suppose you will be too?
No. She shook her head and looked over toward the shaded windows. I have some
unfinished business here.
Alex, he reached out his hand and gently guided her line of vision to match his. Why don t
you come with me? I know maybe you don t want to go back to the... the scene, uh, your apartment, but
you don t have to. I can get your things and settle up for you. If you need a place to stay for a while, I
have an extra room? He lifted his eyebrows as if suggesting it would be a safe haven, yet she saw a
trail of emotion lurking underneath the innocent proposal. It s yours for the asking. I promise I m not
such a bad guy to be around.
Alex laughed. Nice and perhaps tempting offer. Wouldn t be a bad idea to hang around with a
cop for awhile. After all, her safety seemed to be a constant issue these days.
She sensed the worst of it was behind her, though. All she needed to do now was to seek the
truth. It would be something she had to do alone. Lonely might be something she was destined to
permanently become accustomed to. Then again?
It s very sweet of you, Kyle, and I may just take you up on that offer sometime soon. Right
now I really need to put my affairs in order. It s time to settle my parent s estate and move on.
I understand. He nodded, then shrugged his shoulders slightly. The movement brought a
scowl to his face. Maybe I could just hang out here in Chicago for awhile? I have a ton of time
coming to me anyway. That is if you want the company?
Did she want the company? Did she want his company? Maybe, but she couldn t drag him any
further into this mess. It d nearly cost him his life already. Kyle, I m sure your chomping to get back
to work. And you don t strike me as the kind of man who would be happy just tagging along for awhile.
I ll be fine, really, and we ll stay in touch. Can t abandon my rescuer now, can I?
Your rescuer? I think you have that a little backwards lady. I guess... I guess I owe you a lot,
Donegal 139
don t I?
